Out-of-the-Norm Attractions to See in Beverly Hills

Want to travel to one of America’s cities where million-dollar homes are the norm? Then you might want to head to Beverly Hills. Just outside of Los Angeles, the contrast between this wealthy area and those surrounding it can be eye opening. If you are going to actually stay in Beverly Hills, you can use sites like Expedia to find the right Beverly Hills hotel, probably one you can actually afford.

There are plenty of typical tours and place to visit in Beverly Hills, but if you want to get a little off the beaten path, here are five places you just may want to add to your list.

Greystone Mansion

You’ve probably already seen the inside of the Greystone Mansion, but you don’t know it. Since it was donated to the public by its owner in 1976 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places, it has appeared in several films and television series including The Big Lebowski, Ghostbusters II, Gilmore Girls, MacGuyver, The Witches of Eastwick, and more.

You may have seen the black and white tiled hallway in one film and the wood paneled office in another, but chances are you don’t know the sordid history of the place. Designed by Gordon Kaufmann, better known for his work on the Hoover Dam and the Los Angeles Times building, Neal Doheny Jr., son of the infamous oil tycoon Edward Doheny, moved in.

Shortly after he moved in though, a strange murder-suicide occurred, one which remains a mystery to this day primarily because the events that evening as described by the family and the forensic evidence never really matched up. Explore this iconic mansion and heare all about it.

24 Hour Sprinkles

Late night on the town, or getting in off a red-eye flight, and craving a fantastic pastry? There is no better way to deal with a severe case of jet lag than a delicious and gorgeous pastry. What bakery is open all night? Well there is one in Beverly Hills, 24 Hour Sprinkles, that does not have to be open for you to get a cupcake fix.

That’s right, this must-visit spot, no matter what time of day you arrive there, has the world’s first Cup Cake ATM. That’s right, insert your form of payment and you can get a cupcake any time of day or night, dispensed for you on the spot.

Don’t expect a sale though. Like everything in Beverly Hills, 24 Hour Sprinkles is upscale, but the tasty treats are worth the cash.

Spadena House

Another must visit spot is a house in Beverly Hills known formally as “The Spadena House.” However, it is more commonly called by the name “The Witch’s House.” Built in 1921 by Harry Oliver, the yellow house earns its name for its sloping, odd shaped roof that oddly resembles a sagging witch’s hat. The pitched roof is covered in unusually-shaped dark shingles.

The house was originally built in Culver City and it served as the offices for the WIllat silent film studio. It was moved to Beverly Hills in 1926 or 1934, no one knows for sure since the accounts differ, and it has remained a private residence ever since. The most recent owner, Michael Libow, bought the building in 1997 for $1.3 Million and has since worked on restoring it. Because of its odd appearance, it is a big attraction on Halloween, and Libow prepares for around 4,000 trick or treaters annually.

The 76 Gas Station

The eye catching Googie architectural style was really prevalent in the mid 1960’s. Inspired by the Space Age, fast cars, and jets, Googie style building’s crazy shapes and designs contain steel, plastic, and neon. While many of the odd structures have since been demolished, one iconic example and a must visit is the 76 gas station located at Crescent Drive and Little Santa Monica Boulevard.

Even if all you need is a quick fill-up, stop by and take pictures of the swooping flying carpet type roof, especially when the neon is lit at night.

The Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle could easily be defined as one of the most affluent shopping centers in the United States and possibly the world. Really designed for the ultra-rich of Beverly Hills, it is filled with designer shops and unique stores where if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it.

Do some window shopping, and then if you see something you like, go elsewhere and buy the knock-off brand, unless you truly can ignore price tags and swipe your obsidian level credit card with no worries.

Conclusion

Beverly Hills is a cool and affluent city, and a great place to visit. It’s clean, modern, and filled with fun activities. Just know before you go, and get a little off the beaten path to see some truly amazing attractions.

Why Select Pakistan As Your Holiday Destination this Year

Pakistan is a multi-cultural country in South Asia, owing to its diverse topography mountains, plains, and plateaus. Some of the highest and most dangerous peaks in the world are situated here, so it is a hot destination for trekkers, hikers, and mountaineers. However, the country has a lot more to offer than just impressive landscapes. Pakistan shares the history of the Mughals and the British colonial era with its neighbor India and also hosts the remnants of one of the oldest civilizations of the world, The Indus Valley Civilization, so you will get to see a nice mix of Mughal and British architectures as well as some historically significant sites. The culture and food are not to be neglected, as they will prove to be the hallmark of your journey. The spicy food won’t go easy on your stomach, and it will be tempting you not to stop until you are full to the throat.

Rated by British Backpacker Society as the world’s top adventure travel destination of 2018, Pakistan is a must visit for adventure seekers. To help you out with what to see and where to go in this South-Asian country, I have compiled a list of must-visit places in Pakistan.

Before you go

With more than 100 airfields, and major civil international airports, across Karachi, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, D.G.Khan, Peshawar, Quetta, Rahim Yar Khan, Sialkot, Turbat and Lahore, travelling to Pakistan is now a lot easier than it used to be. Temperatures in the central-southern regions rarely go below 10 degrees, so you won’t need to pack extra clothes, just make sure to prepare for rain if you plan your trip in July (officially the wettest month with an average 100mm of rain). In the northern areas though, winter can be quite cold, so always check the weather when packing. In general, the best way to travel, especially if you’re planning to visit multiple destinations within the country, is to pack light and fly with hand luggage only. I personally prefer high-quality and durable luggage like this carry on for international flights by Tumi.

Hunza Valley

Situated over 2,400 m above sea-level, the Hunza valley is a famous tourist spot. As you are about to enter the valley, you get a brief view of the Rakaposhi Peaks from the Rakaposhi View Point and that sets the tone for what to expect from this destination. A city surrounded by mountains, Karimabad, is a great place to meet and chat with the locals and taste the unique food. Hunza also has a bit of history, which can be seen in the Altit and Baltit Forts, both of which have breathtaking views and interesting background stories. Then there is the recently formed Attabad Lake and the top-most point Eagle’s Nest which serve as perfect reminders of Hunza’s natural beauty.

Lahore

The metropolitan, which is also Pakistan’s second most populous city, served as the Mughal Dynasty’s capital under various rulers. Hence, many remnants of the Mughal era can be found in the huge city. The Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort are some of the most prominent Mughal architectural wonders in the city, and since the Mughal Emperors loved gardens, you will see them in abundance, with the Shalimar Gardens being the most prominent among the lot. Punjab in general and Lahore, in particular, have some very friendly people and tasty delicacies, so be ready to be overflowed with friendly people offering you free things to eat.

Islamabad

The capital city of Pakistan is one of the most beautiful capitals of the world. Islamabad is surrounded on one-side by the lush green Margalla Hills and on the other by its twin city Rawalpindi. While in terms of history, Islamabad is insignificant, it has plenty of opportunities for adventure seekers and peace lovers. Firstly, the weather all across the year is pleasant, so a walk in any of parks is a must. Secondly, the Margalla Hills host a few challenging trekking tracks that adventure seekers climb every day. Other than that, the city is an important cross-road for other exciting destinations in the north of the country, so once you get here, you can go anywhere.

The Karakoram Highway

The mind-numbing highway is also the world’s highest paved international highway. The highway serves as an important trade route between Pakistan and China and crosses through some of the most beautiful mountains, valleys, and gorges. Hence, it is popularly used by locals and foreigners as a route for a road trip, which starts from Islamabad onto China through Khunjerab Pass. However, the roads are treacherous with sharp turns and twists that test even the most established drivers, so it’s best to go there with a tour operator. Interestingly, along the way you get to view rock carvings of Buddha made centuries ago, chiefly at the archeological site of Shatial.

Karachi

The City of Lights, Karachi is situated in the extreme south of the country and is the most populated city in Pakistan with over 20 million residents. Therefore, you will find a mix of all Pakistani cultures in the city. Karachi is best known for its food and shopping scene. There are many dining restaurants as well as street food areas in the cosmopolitan. You should definitely try Biryani, a spicy rice-based dish that Karachi is well known for. Karachi had a great significance for the British, when it was under their rule, as it had the largest natural port of the region and thus it became the economic hub. You will also find British era buildings like the Frere Hall (which now serves as a library, art gallery, and theater) and the Merewether Tower spread in the downtown of the city. Additionally, the National Museum Karachi has precious artifacts from the Indus Valley Civilization and the Buddhist dynasties, so pay them a visit as well.

Pakistan is largely misrepresented in the international media as a war-torn country but that’s far from the reality. The country is pretty safe for travelers and tourists who want to have an adventure of their lifetime.

1. Fylingdales Moor

Don your walking shoes and head for an amazing walk on this wonderful moorland. It is free of cost and is open 24/7. The Hawk and Owl Trust manages this Moor for its biodiversity and archaeology. Some of the interesting species within this moor are small birds of prey – the merlin, the diurnal short eared owl, and other species including the small pearl bordered fritillary butterfly. There is a circular trail of 4.3 km that can be walked from the parking area at Jugger Howe layby. It is an absolute delight.

2. Robin Hoods Bay Museum

This unique local museum and mortuary functions entirely on the effort and time put in by volunteers. There are various displays including those around fishing, shipping, local history and geology. Most interestingly, the details of shipwrecks and famous rescues in the Bay are recorded and there is also a unique model of a smuggler’s house that shows the concealment of the contraband.

3. Old Coastguard station:

This special place at the edge of the sea in Robin Hood’s Bay has on display colourful hands-on models and other things. The distinctive geology, the impact of the elements, the indigenous wildlife and the secret history of smuggling make this place even more special. Visitors can enjoy here by making waves, generating wind power and figuring out the natural processes at work here.

4. Falling Foss Waterfall and Tea Garden:

This is a must-visit place especially for those who are fascinated by stunning landscapes and natural beauty. This is located inside the Sneaton Forest and is a short drive away from the Bay. You can spend a relaxing time here, while enjoying the waterfall and tea garden with a nice book in your hands.

5. Old St Stephen’s Church:

If you are a history buff, you must visit this place. This church was built in 1822 to honour the shipwreck victims. It has interesting interiors, with many original items and are a sight to behold.

While the 5 things that we have listed above are definitely fascinating, many come to the Bay just to hit the beach and have some mainstream fun by boating and surfing. There are some great bars in the area, which makes it a real treat to spend a weekend here.
