The Wedding
Cow (1999) (AKA "Die Hochzeitskuh")
A guy and a girl thrown together on the road find
themselves slowly become more than friends. Sounds like
a pretty typical formula does it not? Everything from
"It Happened One Night" to "Forces of Nature" and a
abundance of films in-between could fit under this synopsis.
So could "The Wedding Cow." Doesn't matter though. The
characters and the actors in the film are so wonderful
we don't care if we've seen it before or if we see it
coming. It's still a joyride.
Flora is a young woman trying to find her way to a
new job in the big city. Along the way she finds herself.
Tim is a Momma's boy bachelor about to be hitched in
just days. Along the way he finds himself. Together
they get involved in just about every feasible misadventure
you could imagine. And together they find each other.
It's classic stuff.
"The Wedding Cow" doesn't really mess with the formula.
The characters may not be revolutionary, but the actors
are. Isabella Parkinson and Oliver Reinhard slowly and
assuredly weasel their way into our hearts. We even
start to love the teat-ular cow who is sharing their
ride. (Sorry, I couldn't resist that one!) Tim, you
see, is taking this present from his aunt back to his
home and his future bride. Flora, lost on the road,
accepts a ride from Tim. And all hell breaks loose.
Oh, I'm giving away too much. The film is one of the
sweetest romantic comedies to appear in a long time.
It shows some really beautiful countryside (in Germany,
I think) and delights us with it's mild humor and tentative
charm. As long as you don't mind reading subtitles,
you will love this film.
If you insist on English, go rent one of the classics.
If you like a little adventure, this one is surely the
ticket. It's got all that and a cow! A great moo-vie...
