The
Waterboy (1998)
Rather poor outing from Adam Sandler. At least it gets
better as it goes along. But Sandler, and writing partner
Tim Herlihy, just seem to try anything to be funny and
usually fail. Here's an example: Sandler's film homelife
is supposed to be bucolic, so he and his mother, played
by Kathy Bates in a rare comic role, have a mule living
in their house named Steve. Sigh.
The worst, however, is when Rob Schnieder appears
over and over in the final 30 minutes of the film playing
a dumbass local. It's a running gag that is one of the
stupidest uses of a running gag I have ever witnessed.
Apparently, this is an "inside joke," because on one
of Sandler's comedy CD's, Sandler plays "the fast talking
Southerner," which he also plays here, and Schnieder
plays a goat, and he uses the same voice here. Pretty
lame.
Note: Also with Henry Winkler, Jerry Reed, Fairuza
Baulk and Blake Heron.
