Space Station (2002) (AKA Space Station IMAX)

I was teary eyed all through "Space Station." The film just got to me. An IMAX documentary projected in 3D, the film features much footage shot in space by astronauts and cosmonauts.

The images are startling. Although the 3D often reminds one of the pop-up book from childhood, where 3D images were really 2D images in a sort of 3D mock-up, it is nonetheless fascinating. And the bottom line is this: The film is just about the closest thing to being in space that we mere mortals will ever experience. It is the closest the average person will come to slipping the surely bonds of Earth and experiencing deep space.

The images here will overwhelm you. At times, because space is so unknown to us, they actually look phony. We have no context in which to process the visuals we see here. This film is simply like nothing we've ever seen before.

And the idea of the International Space Station is so overwhelming as well. As a child of the 60's and 70's, I never thought a day would come when Russians would be considered our allies. To watch Soviet and American astronauts working and living together is heartwarming. This is important and groundbreaking stuff. It makes one proud to be alive on the planet. It inspires such hope. For all the naysayers of the space program, the massive program has achieved an overwhelming ideal. We have all come closer as a planet, as a society of humans, due to this project. That makes it worth more than the billions of dollars it has cost.

Tom Cruise, who provides a stately and reverent air, narrates "Space Station". He may occasionally get a little too majestic in his voiceover but the subject matter more than deserves such kindness. This is an amazing film and one that proves how valuable cinema is to us as a society. With "Space Station" the average guy gets to go to space. It is the closest we may ever come to being there. And its probably less than 10 bucks to do so. Not bad when others are paying $15 million for the experience.

Seek out an IMAX theater in your surrounding area showing this film. Even if you have to travel a few hundred miles to get there, the journey you will experience is out of this world.
