Road
Trip (2000)
Bye Bye "American Pie."
Films like "American Pie" and "There's Something About
Mary" have taken teen sex romp comedy to the modern
conclusion. Gross out jokes, lotsa nudity and sex, an
unashamed boldness of sexuality where virtually nothing
is taboo, and an ability to laugh at our own ridiculous
and neurotic sexual selves. It's a great service to
American youth.
"Road Trip" takes it all one step further. Sure, nobody
fucks a pie, but the film uses many sexual situations
to open our eyes to the wonderful humor and beautiful
openness our sexuality can take. Isn't that one of the
things we should discover in college anyway?
DJ Qualls as Kyle is the best here. Gawky and nerdy,
he becomes a Sex God. Jesus Christ. Look at the package
on that boy in the wonderful shots where he is in his
briefs. He's got a package that UPS wouldn't deliver
for under a hundred bucks! This boy is hung like a convicted
horse thief. Every geek in high school should be able
to get laid after this film. And Qualls steals every
scene in which he appears. He makes the geek the star.
It's awesome. I'll be on line all fucking night looking
for stolen still from his scenes in the alt.geek.male.package.huge
newsgroup.
E.L., as played by Seann William Scott ("Final Destination"),
demystifies a part of male sexuality that has went undiscussed
for far too long. He breaks taboos. The film goes somewhere
with his character that is hilarious and truthful. It's
beautiful.
Paulo Costanzo makes drugs fun again. No guilt. No
bad feelings. Can we all be allowed to party just a
little? Can I smoke a joint and have an orgasm please?
Is that too much too ask for? This seems to be the underlying,
unspoken question of "Road Trip." It's about time someone
asked it. Can kids have fun again? Please.
Tom Green... Well, Tom Green deconstructs every American
taboo left lying around. He is boundless. As our narrator,
he proves that there is no wrong. There are no rules.
It's great.
This is an awesome American film. Schools should take
field trips. There is knowledge in the freedom to laugh,
and to discuss, and to explore. Especially about sexuality.
"Road Trip." It goes on a journey through sexual self-
discovery that makes sex and drugs and rock'n'roll fun
again.
It's about fucking time!
Note:
Also with Breckin Meyer, Fred Ward, Andy Dick, Rachael
Blanchard, Omar Dorsey, Amy Smart, Ethan Suplee, Anthony
Rapp. Writer/Director Todd Phillips has a cameo as a
toe sucker.
Rapp was in "Dazed and Confused," another film which
had Austin, TX locales. Although "Road Trip" climaxes
in Austin, there is only a limited amount of scenery
shot at the city.
Rumor has it Qualls auditioned for a one line part
and was immediately rushed to meet producer Ivan Reitman.
He was cast as Kyle immediately.
