Poor
White Trash (2000)
For a film with such a promising title, "Poor White
Trash" truly fails to deliver. This film has a really
bad plot yet it is full of funny one liners. Unfortunately,
the actors in the film rarely know how to deliver the
dialogue or the story to us correctly. This is as much
the director's fault as the thespians involved. The
whole damn thing just lays there. This is like a John
Waters' script directed by Penelope Spheeris. Well,
if Spheeris was on some sort of severe antidepressant.
Or perhaps qualudes.
The film has the always-awful Sean Young as a single
mom trying to help her son get to college. Young is
usually pretty bad, but she actually tries here, a big
mistake, so all of the jokes and ideas around her crumble
to pieces. Sigh... If only she would have not cared.
Jason London, who is always easy to look at, tries too.
At least he attempts to be "zany." He's too good for
this tripe. William Devane is also a problem here. The
only person I can think of who might be more annoying
in the role he occupies is Robert Conrad. Although,
I think he may be dead.
Writer/Director Michael Addiss can't seem to get a
handle on anything here and that's a shame. It's depressing
to see something that could have been a fun- filled,
campy, crazy masterpiece turned in to a low budget disaster
wannabee. The homages to John Waters, Roger Corman and
others that are here are nowhere near as imaginative,
hilarious or freaky as their impetus. And that's too
bad.
"Poor White Trash" makes a great preview trailer.
Hopefully this alone will allow it's creator to get
an audience. His film won't.
