Men in Black II (2002)

The most ubiquitous gossip I heard about "MIB2," before I saw it was that it was pretty much a rehash of the original film. Therefore, since I wasn't seeing the film early or anything, I decided not to watch the original before seeing the sequel. Perhaps this is the best way to see it because I found it delightful and funny. The original was released 4 or 5 years ago and I don't really remember too much about it.

Tommy Lee Jones' deadpan is only surpassed by Will Smith's humorous asides. Truly, I found myself laughing at so many things Smith said that seemed like ad-libs. He's just a funny guy. And, you know, even thought I "don't like dark meat," I must admit that Smith looks hot in a black suit and tie.

The villain here is played by Lara Flynn Boyle. She's not my favorite actress but she does okay. She seems like pretty much a bitch so when she plays a bitch here, it is pretty easy to believe. Also, there's some guy who looks like he is suppose to resemble Vincent D'onofrio. Is he playing the same character? (Ummmm.... no).

Director Barry Sonnenfeld keeps the action going and the script is likeable enough. The special effects are usually pretty good but there's plenty of blue screen and CGI effects that don't come together very well. A lot of the film's special effects seems lazy and sloppy, actually.

I found "MIB2" a pleasant summer diversion. Certainly nothing to rave about though.

Notes:

Also with Rip Torn, Johnny Knoxville, Rosario Dawson, Tony Shaloub, Patrick Warburton, David Cross.

Sonnenfeld and Make-Up Artist Rick Baker have cameos.

Michael Jackson, Biz Markie and Martha Stewart also have cameos. Jackson's is supposed to be funny. It's not.

Steven Spielberg is a producer here, as he was on the first. Music by Danny Elfman. Smith does a song for the soundtrack.

As is well known, the ending first shot featured the World Trade Center towers but this had to be re-written and re-shot after 9/11.

For some weird reason, during the film, I really wanted a Pepsi and a Whopper.
