In Dreams (1999)

Nope. Water-logged drivel from Neil Jordan who drags Annette Benning and Robert Downey Jr. down with him. At times, we think the film is going to pull a coup, like the extended midsection with a teenager transvestite. But Jordan can never pull the desperate strings of all the elements here together. It's like a macrame by a 4 year old. Tangles and frayed ends.

Devon Borisoff should be applauded for his courage in portraying a young man in the grips of dementia. His portion of the film almost draws us into the whole scope of the picture. But Jordan, who uses underwater photography to the point of becoming a Jaques Cousteau documentary on acid, can't keep the film cohesive. Nor can he keep it from imploding under the weakness of it's plot's infrastructure. The final straw is an ending, which seems tacked on as if it were required by a "test" screening audience's whim. At best, it's a rip-off of some sad "Twilight Zone" script.

We could talk all day about the problems with the film, but any other comment is merely applesauce.

Note: With Dennis Boutsikaris, Aidan Quinn and Stephen Rea. Produced by Stephen Wooley. Music by Elliot Goldenthal.

The huge water tanks used to create a town underwater were also used in the production of "Titanic."
