Delirium: Episode 2 - Another Day on the Street (2000)

Okay. first things first. I laughed my ass of at a lot of stuff in this short. But the film is soooooo long. It goes on forever. Filmmakers Wee Pirate Films, and I assume this is made up of the folks in the film as well as those behind the scenes, seem to keep everything they shot in the finished edit of the film. At somewhere around 30 minutes, the piece would work much better at 12-15. There's too much junk in between truly hilarious moments.

But the real problem of the film is it's subject matter. "Another Day on the Street" lampoons prostitution. Not just that, the lowest form of street trash imaginable. The film has Leon Mandel and Andy Fisher as "ho's." By this I mean, the two young males wear the most absurd costumes (business dress with ties) while they have glitter on their face and heavy, heavy make-up. They talk like prostitutes. Let's be honest: They talk like black female prostitutes. This film seems to want to parody those "on the street" documentaries about prostitutes that attempt to show how it truly is. But is this an appropriate subject/genre for parody? I think not. The film might work if it were shorter, but at it's present length, it becomes tedious and unsavory.

The acting can be a victim to the length of this film too. One of the males who stars, the more slim lead of the two, is downright hilarious. He seems to be ad-libbing at times, most of this stuff seems improvised, and he's just funny and ridiculous. He really plays up the aspects of the type of character he is portraying and seems to be unafraid to say anything to get the laugh. A elongated monologue where he discusses his thoughts on swallowing too much ejaculate and becoming a "cum-head" is one of the most ludicrous and sublime laughs I have had in ages. This guy really makes the film work. It is his cohort, the larger of the two stars, who tends to drone on and on and not be amusing whatsoever. Perhaps I am just jealous that a larger, prettier man than myself got the part. What's more likely, actually, is that he edited the piece and kept far too many unnecessary moments in the film.

One of the most absurd points in the film is this: A pair of pants plays a prostitute named Khaki. Yes, that's right. A pair of pants! It's insane. But it's really not funny. Two moments in the film go far too far over the line utilizing this "character:" In one, the pants are "beaten" by a John and then they proceed to bleed (red liquid gushes out of them and soaks the fabric). One can almost hear the frat boys laughing. It's not amusing in the least. Worse yet is the final segment in the film where the pants appear to have "AIDS" lesions on them. Repulsive. Disgusting. Shameful. This is not funny nor is it insightful. I was ashamed to have laughed at the film after this scene.

"Delirium" stars an acquaintance of mine named Roy Koshy. He plays a pretty one-dimensional and silly character. I'm going to have to have a little chat with him.
