Blue Velvet (1986)

"I thought a lot about 'Blue Velvet' before I did it. That was a big decision; you've got to really think  about what you're putting out there. I almost didn't do it, but I put my trust in David."
- Kyle MacLachlan

"I had to think for a long time whether to do 'Blue Velvet' or not; my morals really came into it. Ultimately, my trust in David Lynch won out - I just think his vision is fantastic. When I read the script... I really wanted Sandy to have some strength so that the audience could see the light in the darkness.
- Laura Dern

Before "Twin Peeks," David Lynch took an even stranger journey through American life via the small city of "LumberTown." The opening shots show that this is no ordinary town. The fire trucks in LumberTown go in slo-mo.

Kyle Maclachlan plays Jeffrey Beaumont. An innocent  young boy back in town after his first year of college. One day, while walking thru a slightly bad part of town, Jeffrey finds a human ear in a vacant lot. This clue sends him on an fact finding mission that has him ever-spiraling further and further down into the depths of human depravity. A world where people are kidnapped, held for sexual slavery and generally mistreated.

Others in the cast include Laura Dern, Isabella Rosellini, Dean Stockwell, and Hope Lange. But the star of the show is Dennis Hopper.

Hopper portrays Frank Booth. The seediest person that one could ever meet, Booth spews out the f-word at least 3 times per sentence. What is so harrowing about Hopper's performance is the realism. The character is so insane that he becomes real... too real... Hyper-real. And therein lies the truly eerie aspect of this movie. It is just so bizarre that it actually becomes errily realistic.

Plan on investing 20 minutes or so to get into the pace of the film, then prepare to be taken on the ride of a lifetime. "It's a strange world" claims Maclachlan and Dern throughout the movie. Strange indeed.

Note: Lynch lost funding for the film when "Dune" was a commercial (and critical) failure. Eventually, he was able to get funding for the project.

Dern and Maclachlan dated after they did the film together. Dern: "Kyle reminds me of Cary Grant. I'd like to be able to play opposite him again in a Hepburn-Tracy kind of movie. We are really funny together."
