Big
Momma's House (2000)
Martin Lawrence in a prosthetics and a dress does not
a comedy make. Far from it. In fact, the only thing
that makes us even able to stomach this film is that
it recalls our memories of the delightful "Mrs. Doubtfire"
and warms our heart with melancholia. We so often expect
Lawrence, when his make-up is off and he is surprised
by a visitor, to push his face in a cream pie and rip-off
the better original film. Surprisingly, he never stoops
to this bit of cinematic plagiarism.
The film is formulaic all the way. When we hear Lawrence
and his sidekick (played by Paul Giamatti, who looks
like Kevin Pollack's bastard son) have a brief chat
about how the former doesn't have a family, we know
Lawrence is going to fall for the girl in the film.
And, of course, she has a son in tow. Instant family
equals instant happy ending.
"Big Momma's House" is really a simple-minded and
typical film. It doesn't ask much from us and we don't
have to give much in return. You can simply go, turn
off your brain, and enjoy if you want to. The question
is, with the plethora of worthy summer films out there,
who would want to?
