American Pie 2 (2001)

The question is simple: Is this sequel as funny as the first one. The answer is simple too: Yes.

Albeit, there is no reason to call this film "American Pie," other than it is a sequel. There are no pastries used for fornication in this film. But there sure are a lot of sex jokes. Tons of them, often at the expense of plot, character development and reality. But, of course, this is aimed at 16 year olds so those things are, really unimportant.

There's lots of attractive half-naked guys and girls here to keep anyone with hormones interested. Jason Biggs has created a niche for playing pathetic losers but at least in this film his character is likable. He needs more time with his dad, Eugene Levy, though. They are perfect together. Biggs also has fun with Seann William Scott and the other two young male actors who haven't made it big from the film, Shitbreak and the Italian looking guy. Why haven't we seen these two young actors in any teen sex romp knock offs like Chris Klien, Biggs and Williams? They are just as funny, just as cute and just as talented. Oh - maybe they're just smart.

The only one here who is now way out of his element is Klien who looks terribly embarrassed to be caught in such a ridiculous teen sex romp. His already rosy complexion is made even redder by the masturbation material he is forced to engage in here.

Meanwhile, the females are given almost nothing to do. Shannon Elizabeth, Natasha Lyonne, Mena Suvari, and Tara Reid have nothing. NOTHING to do here. They aren't even really required to look sexy. Only Lisa Arturo, forever known as "One time at band camp..." has any real fun here. She's hilarious as an expanded character. And we actually get to go to band camp, which is a blast. (Speaking of blast... the trumpet joke is hilarious!)

The direction by J.B. Rogers ("Say It Isn't So"), who helped on the original, is far less professional than the Paul Weitz. The film doesn't flow very nicely and seems more obsessed with getting to the next cum/jerk off/lesbian sex joke than telling any kind of a real story. But "American Pie 2" is funny as hell. As funny and crude and sophomoric as the first one. That's all that really matters.
