Notes
from Austin Volume 3 #1
Lodger's
Notes
Lotsa news in the latest "Hollywood News" about Austin
films playing in Park City - so please check that out
too!
For my 38th birthday present to myself, I reread Kurt
Vonnegut's "Slapstick" in under 24 hours. It is still
my favorite book of all time.
My friend Phatt Matt recently loaned me his copy of
T.C. Boyle's "stories," (sic), a collection of the author's
published short stories. I have only read a few but
they are really awesome.
Meanwhile, my friend Kelly loaned me a copy of a CD
by Yo La Tenga called "and then nothing turned itself
inside out." I have never heard of this band before
but they are awesome. The sound a bit like The Velvets
and Lou Reed but also a splash of Sonic Youth and modern
folkies like Ben Lee make their influences heard. I
really dig this band and want to hear more of their
stuff.
What's up with this Kraft Cheese Singles commercial where
a 9 year old boy gives a little girl a sandwich while
Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" plays in the background?
My friend Allan Campbell informs me that it's no longer
available in the flesh, but now you can see Annie Sprinkle's
cervix online!

I had my first of two birthday parties this year at my
folks' house in Houston. Mark Brauner of Lube Tv and Houston
filmmaker Vassily Fedyaev were some of the many in attendance.
Vassily brought his new short film "Impatience" and screened
it for the crowd. My Houston friends are mostly non-film
types and it was interesting to see their reactions to
Vassily's very unique and cinematic short.
Mark is going to show it on LubeTV very soon.
Speaking of cable access, I still enjoy watching the Eastern
philosophy program that airs Tuesday nights at 10pm on
channel 16. The past few shows however have suffered from
sound problems, but I still find myself cranking up the
Tv and straining to hear what is said. This is more than
a Buddhist show, I have discovered as the "teacher" on
the program, Gangaji, a female, incorporates many philosophies
into her beliefs. For more info check out www.gangaji.org
Harry Knowles and his entourage recently got a sneak peek
at the "Lord of the Rings" trailer one day before the
general public thanks to New Line. The trailer was attached
to the new film "13
Days," a horrible placement, and Harry got the special
gander when the Costner film previewed here one day before
it's release. The rest of the sneak crowd had to wait
outside while Harry got a view. The trailer, for what
it's worth, only serves to prove that Elijah Wood will
be the cutest little Hobbit/elf/whatever of all time.
He so impish. He's so cute. Even Santa Clause would get
wood from looking at this little elf. This continues Wood's
predominance as a 20 year old who looks 12. He makes Ralph
Macchio look octogenarian.
Meanwhile, teen actors who have had growth spurts
lately, taking away from their preteen audience appeal
include Frankie Munoz of "Malcolm in the Middle" and
that kid who used to be on "Freak and Geeks" but is
now on the "Geena Davis Show." These boys' hormones
are out of control!
Some weird statistics about John Christensen's last appearance
on LubeTV before his untimely death.
1. The last episode to feature John is Episode 42
2. In Douglas Adam's "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy,"
the meaning of life is finally determined to be, by
a bunch of computers, "42."
3. Mark Brauner is often referred to by his friends
as (and was often called by John) Zaphod, a name which
he takes from his favorite book, the aforementioned
Adams tome.
I know this is a short one this time kids but the Holidays
were pretty dull around town and January is my birthday
and I've got a lot going on. I'm still previewing films
for SXSW and working my incredibly lame day job.
Until next time, that's a wrap...
