Austin Film News Tim and Karrie League at the Alamo Drafthouse
recently bought out an entire drive in movie library of
35mm prints of some of the cheesiest and most interesting
sounding exploitation films. Titles like "Naughty Cheerleaders"
and "Naked Nurses." They plan to show them on Wednesday
nights in the new year absolutely free to the public 18
and up. I guess the food and drink purchases will more
than make up for the money spent.
The Alamo also has an Oscar party planned for the
new year. Their spring calendar is due out soon.
Have you seen the ads for Earthlink featuring Harry Knowles?
Why? How?
Speaking of Knowles, rumor had it that he was going
to show the first 30 minutes of the new Peter Jackson
"Lord of the Rings" film. This sucker still isn't due
in theaters for a whole year, Xmas 2001. Knowles did
show 1977's animated "The Hobbit." I'll have to check
around to see if I can get anyone to confirm the "Rings"
rumor. Kimberley Jones of the "Chronicle" lists the
films shown, mirroring the event coverage Tim the Wonder
Horse provided for File Thirteen last year. Jones lists
one film as a "Mystery Movie" which cannot be revealed
"due to an audience pact with Harry."
Speaking of getting ripped-off, the "Austin American
Statesman" ran an article about the "overscreening"
of America last Sunday. This was a story about how the
number of theater screens in America (and austin in
particular) has increased dramatically over the last
4 or 5 years. Filethirteen has been on this story for
about 4 month now with several articles under the "Clash
of the Cinema Titans" in our archives. Gee - are
the local rags ever going to have an original idea again?
Bob Schnieder has some tunes on the "Miss Congeniality"
soundtrack. Imagine that.
Wiley Wiggins
is in the new Zellner Brothers movie, "Frontier." I asked
Wiley if he had seen the final film yet and he responded,
"I just saw a rough cut... it's really awesome.. Like
if Herzog did a comedy. Sort of." wow! Can't wait to see
that. I recently saw Zellner's short "Gentleman Caller"
on LubeTV but I've never been able to see the feature
"Plastic Utopia." It's on my list.
My friend Alan Campbell is teaching a class on film this
spring. "Lube while you learn! Film class comes to Dougherty
in January." Find out more at http://lubetv.homepage.com

THE AUSTIN FILM SOCIETY LAUNCHES NEW STUDIO COMPLEX AT
MUELLER AIRPORT. "AUSTIN STUDIOS" A UNIQUE PUBLIC/PRIVATE
PARTNERSHIP WITH CITY OF AUSTIN. SUZANNE QUINN APPOINTED
STUDIO DIRECTOR
AUSTIN, TEXAS - The Austin Film Society (AFS) today
officially announced the launch of "Austin Studios:
Soundstages & Media Center" - a multi-faceted film/
television/multimedia studio complex, and the appointment
of Suzanne Quinn as Director of the new Austin Studios.
The announcement was made at a luncheon and studio tour
for key business, community and entertainment figures
in the Austin area, as well as representatives from
the film and media communities in Los Angeles and New
York.
Austin Studios will be operated as a non-profit venture
of the Austin Film Society to complement AFS' efforts
in the areas of community outreach, education and the
development of the local film and multimedia industries.
The Austin City Council approved a lease and management
agreement with The Austin Film Society on October 12,
2000 to dedicate, on an interim basis, approximately
20 acres of the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport
(RMMA) for the creation of this multimedia studio complex.
"In my view, this is an example of how the City is working
in a very positive way not, only to preserve the original
creative energy of the city, but to enhance [it]," said
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson. The Austin Film Society and
the Austin City Council worked for eight months to craft
this agreement, which creates a unique public/ private
partnership. The production facility will provide the
missing element in Austin's local infrastructure, attracting
more productions to Austin, thus enhancing the planned
redevelopment of RMMA and contributing to the general
economic, educational and cultural environment of Austin.
In addition to housing the new Austin Film Society offices,
the site features an office building and six airplane
hangars that will be used for production space. Long-term
plans include the creation of a screening room and long-term
office space, as well as an educational component offering
apprenticeships and internships for high school and
college students.
AFS Executive Director Rebecca Campbell stated, "This
effort will develop the skill base of the local workforce
and aid in the growth of the film/video/multimedia industry
in Austin. We are very excited about this new venture,
and very appreciative of the Mayor and City Council
for their support."
Austin Studios new Director Suzanne Quinn, who holds
an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, formerly
handled marketing, sales and media relations for Austin's
notable SXSW Film Festival. "We are starting out strong,"
said Ms. Quinn, "we currently have a feature film called
'The New Guy' in production, and we had our first commercial
shoot last Monday."
The Austin Film Society was founded in 1985 by filmmaker
Rick Linklater, who still serves as Artistic Director.
AFS exists to foster appreciation of the art of film
and to support the creative vision of filmmakers.
Tuesday, 11/28, Mark David's impressive debut, "SWEET
THING" hit the shelves of Hollywood Video stores across
the U.S.. David's directorial debut stars Jeremy Fox,
Ev Lunning, Amalia Stifter, Michael Dalmon and Tim Curry
and will be available for rental on VHS and DVD.
Speaking of the now L.A. resident Mark David, Jason Lee
of the band The Agency, of which David is the drummer,
informs me that they are back in the studio. Sayeth Lee,
"I believe I mentioned before that Mark and Will are scoring
"The Duo." Well, a couple of new Agency tracks might understandably
creep into the soundtrack. At the risk of jinxing the
whole thing, I have to tell you this: things are looking
quite positive as to the possibility of the score being
produced by The Other Brothers. These guys picked up a
Grammy this year for their work on Santana's "Supernatural"
CD, and are the occasional cohorts the acclaimed production
duo, The Dust Brothers... Look for new tracks to start
appearing on our MP3.com page in about 2 months.".
Lee recently tried out for "win Ben Stien's money"
in L.A. but didn't get a call back. He know spends his
spare time, what little of it there is, making the rounds
trying to get on lesser game shows.
