Film News
Harry Knowles of Aint It Cool News will have a cameo in
John Carpenter's "Ghosts of Mars."
I heard a rumor that Margaret Cho's concert film, "I'm
the One that I Want" may appear again at the Village Cinema
Arts theater. Cho has been here twice in the past few
months, at the Paramount and at the Bad Dog Comedy Theater
and both times either finances or schedule conflicts have
kept me from seeing her. I also goofed around and missed
the film when it showed at the Dobie a while back. I hope
I get to see her somewhere, somehow, soon.
Greg Berlanti's "The Broken Hearts Club," opens this Friday
November 17 at The Dobie Theater and Arbor Theater.
Mark David, director of "Sweet Thing" and drummer for
the band The Agency and his oft times collaborator Will
Tabanou have finally joined Barry Whitaker and Jason Lee
out in Earthquake Central, L.A., each, according to Lee,
"lugging along huge truckloads of stuff that they don't
need. Someone should've clued them in to what parents'
garages are for..."
Lee continues," we all spent a delightful weekend
hauling stuff into second story apartments and storage
units. (Now) we go hunting for practice spaces. A monthly
lockout space out here costs about as much as a nice
1 bedroom apartment in Austin."
As for their plans, Lee tells me, "Our first order
of business is to record some new tunes for the 'DUO'
soundtrack. Our second order of business is global domination.
Look for the new tracks at MP3.com in about a month.
Rest assured, you'll know when we've accomplished our
second goal."
AUSTIN CINEMAKER CO-OP PRESENTS FREE SCREENING OF BROTHERS
QUAY FILMS Sunday, November 19th at 7pm in the ACA Gallery
of the ArtPlex, the Austin Cinemaker Co-op proudly presents
a video screening of animated films by the Brothers Quay:
Street of Crocodiles 1986, 21 minutes; De Artificiali
Perspectivas or Anamorphosis 1991, 15 min; Dramolet
(Stille Nacht I) 1998, 1 min; and, Rehearsals for Extinct
Anatomies 1987 14 min.
Cinemaker technical assistants Andrew Busti and Sebastian
Castillo will host the screening, which will take place
in the ACA Gallery of the ArtPlex at 1705 Guadalupe,
as part of Cinemaker's bi-monthly meeting. This event
is open and free to the public. Come join Austin's growing
Super 8 film community for an evening of visual poetry
and a discourse that will get your reels turnin'.
The ardently prolific Brothers Quay are known for
their instantly recognizable, yet enigmatic style of
animation. Born during the 50's to a middle class family
living on the outskirts of Philadelphia, the identical
twins moved to England nearly two decades ago. Influences
upon their filmmaking aesthetic include: Kafka's diaries;
Luis Bunuel's Un Chien Andalou; the music of Mahler,
Bartok and Janacek; and the visual style of Eastern
European graphics.
The films of the Brothers Quay point indirectly to
their own intensely private universe that has long since
departed from their roots in the normal, often cliche
middle class America. Their films are considered to
be "closer to music than to dialogue, closer to poetry
than to literature, and closer to an interior monologue
than to fictional narrative." Likewise, their images
resist classification; as they are simultaneously "complex
and cunning, slyly evasive of the butterfly pinning
which some critics undertake in their dissections of
art."
The Austin Cinemaker Co-op holds open meetings once
every two months. These bi-monthly meetings are a forum
for filmmakers to screen new works and works-in-progress
on VHS, Super 8, or 16mm and for open dialogue about
film techniques and film production. So please bring
your latest projects to share with the group!

Notes: (New 11-17-00)
Ah, the election! I am so excited about this election.
I voted for Nader since Bush was obviously going to
win Texas. I am pissed off about it now because those
fucking dumbass schmucks in Florida who were Nader supporters
should have been smart enough to vote for Gore. Dumbasses.
