Ron Howard's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" Boris Karloff
narrated the 1966 TV version. I smell another flop for Howard

Spielberg's "A.I." I didn't see it the first time, when it
was called "Bicentennial Man."

still no word on when Pitt's film "Snatch" will be released.

Start spreading the news...! Slamdance is bringin' our message
to New York (we're missing the big UN summit, so we're settling
for the IFFM) and takin' it to the streets. Putting the 'festive'
back into 'festival' and getting ready for the big show in January.
And if you can't wait that long, no problem: You can have that
virtual Slamdance feeling in the comfort of your own home today.
You see, as Slamdance salutes our fellow travelers who recently
skidded off the gravel shoulder of the information superhighway,
we quickly turn our tear-filled eyes back to the center lane
(narrowly avoiding the deer stuck in the middle of the metaphor).
That's right - while mourning their demise, Slamdance quietly
has been "acquiring the assets" of erstwhile dotcoms lately
(that was a couple of filing cabinets we got at Den's firesale
last week, and we just offered eight bucks to Pop for their
leftover balloons from Cannes). And all in the service of
our internet gameplan: Bringing you the best online festival
for films from around the world, while swiftly moving into
production with our slate of original short films. So read
on and keep checking http://www.slamdance.com
for regular updates!
2001 FILM FESTIVAL - Call for Entries!
We've already gotten Wilma, our friendly letter carrier
flexing her postal muscles, as submissions come in for the
big January festival, and the first deadline is still a month
away. But if you're just now unpacking your new VX2000 and
planning on shooting your feature next week, that's fine -
our early deadline may be October 11, but the final deadline
isn't until November 8. So why not hire some of those striking
commercial actors, and put on a show! The fancy online application
is available on our website (and don't forget our massive
Frequently Asked Questions), but if you're old school, just
go ahead and write, call, fax or email us. And if you're interested
in attending the festival (as press, spectator, paparazzi
or souvenir hound) mark your calender for Jan. 20-27, 2001.
We've suggested to the Park City Town Council that they change
their motto to: "Book your condo now - finish editing later!"

ANARCHY - New Slate of Films Online!
It was the Temptations who once said, "It was the third
of September," and so it was that we premiered the new September-October
slate of short films in our Anarchy Online Film Festival:
101 Recipes for Pork by Chris Harris * Bad Habits by Kerry
Beyer * Bring Me Your Love by Ryan Wheeler * Elsewhere by
Brian Drysdale * Hello Kitty by Noel Dowd * Introducing...
"Kirsten Satan Navarre" by J.D. Mitchell * Legs by David Ostry
* The Magic Watch by Jae-Suk Jo * Mysterious World of Birds
by David Hardin * The Old Man and the Goblins by Mark Caballero
& Seamus Walsh
So go to the Anarchy section of the website, sign up to
be an "online juror," watch the films and enjoy! And speaking
of enjoyment, enough of you liked Tennessee Reid Norton's
"The Lizard Whomper" to vote it the winner of the July-August
round of Anarchy films. Congrats, Tennessee! http://www.slamdance.com/anarchy/
Slamdance has always welcomed new upstart festivals who
show up in Park City every year, so we'd like to officially
welcome our friends at Sundance for jumping on the online
festival bandwagon! Of course, our little Anarchy online festival
has been going steadily since January - showcasing all kinds
of great films (that's right, some of them actually originated
on 'film' itself!) And remember, with Anarchy films, the winners
will not only play online in an annual January slugfest, but
the films also will be screened in front of genuine live audiences
in Park City as well as our numerous On the Road events throughout
the year and around the world. We've got one more slate of
films we need for November-December, so if you've got something
good and short, send it in! http://www.slamdance.com/anarchy/submit_your_film.asp
And for those of you who've noticed that Anarchy's been
getting a lot of press lately - particularly at the political
Conventions - you're right! Clearly there's a groundswell
afoot, and we've got the Spykam pictures to prove it! http://www.slamdance.com/2000/ontheroad/spykam/index.asp?article_id=155
$99 SPECIALS - Production Started on Original Films!
Slamdance is happy to announce that we've gone into production
with our first batch of "$99 Specials"! We've given 9 Slamdance
alumni $99 each to create a new film within the next 99 days.
The films will premiere on Slamdance.com in November. The
filmmakers (with their prior Slamdance films listed) are as
follows:
* David Baer (Angry Man) * Brien Burroughs (Urbana) * Eddie
Daniels (Central Standard Time) * Dennis Dortch (Honey) *
Noel Dowd (Hello Kitty) * Daniel Harris (The Bible and Gun
Club) * Rian Johnson (Evil Demon Golfball from Hell) * Tony
Nittoli (Junky) * Rob Thomas (Gerard)
SCREENPLAY COMPETITION - Last Year's Scripts Score Success!
While our crack team of Screenplay Competition readers is
fast at work reading scripts, writing coverage and hashing
out the winners over warm beer and cold coffee, we're happy
to report some nice news from last year's competition: Van
Fischer (director of the Slamdance 2000 feature BLINK
OF AN EYE) recently optioned the Slamdance '99 Screenplay
Competition finalist "Neo Ned" by Tim Boughn - a Slamdance
marriage made in heaven! And Brent Studler, who wrote the
Slamdance '99 Screenplay Competition 3rd Place winner "The
Rape of Marta Alastor," recently optioned both that script
and another to two separate producers. Congratulations, fellas!
So remember, we will announce this year's winners on Monday,
Sept. 25th. Coverage will be available after that date for
one month. If you are a company interested in the top 12 logline
list, please contact our offices with your company profile
and contact information -- we have a database of interested
companies forming, and they will be faxed or emailed the loglines
after the decisions are posted. If you have any other questions
about the Screenplay Competition, check out the Frequently
Asked Questions at: http://www.slamdance.com/screencomp/
NODANCE YEAR FOUR ANNOUNCES CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR ITS PARK
CITY 2001 EVENT
Los Angeles ? (September 13th, 2000) -- The irreverent independent
Nodance Film & Multimedia Festival has just announced its
call for submissions for the annual event to be held in Park
City, Utah from January 20th through January 26th, 2001. All
submissions for features, shorts, and music videos must be
postmarked by November 18th, 2000 for festival consideration.
Nodance celebrates the alternative digital film culture with
an emphasis on converging technologies and digital filmmaking.
The event holds the distinction of being the world's first
DVD-projected film festival.
"It's exciting to bring together such a diverse lineup of
edgy digital video and film projects for the public," says
festival director James Boyd. "For a filmmaker, nothing beats
hearing the roar of applause, and receiving feedback from
the audience. With limited production budgets preventing many
first-time filmmakers from being accepted by the larger festivals,
Nodance is more than willing to provide them with the Park
City experience."
Swelling crowds attended Nodance 2000, which highlighted
many first-time filmmakers, and was free to the general public.
Competition films are eligible for the Grand Jury and Audience
Awards, and back by popular demand is the highly-coveted "Golden
Orbs" award for the most creative guerrilla marketing campaign
on the mountain.
Located on Park City's historic Main Street, the Nodance
2001 headquarters is the epicenter of all Nodance activity,
and will host industry panels, networking events, and desktop
technology demonstrations. During the 2000 program in Park
City, Nodance had four short films acquired for distribution
by Atomfilms.com, and one "big lizard" short film acquisition
with Mediatrip.com. Additionally, the infamous Nodance "Walk
On Program," will once again provide mini-screenings for any
filmmaker and for any project.
Nodance has been covered by all facets of the media including
CNN, Time Magazine, WIRED Magazine, The New York Times, The
L.A. Times, Daily Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Moviemaker
Magazine, Film Threat, and indieWIRE. YEAR FOUR continues
the international traveling roadshow and online film programs,
and the Nodance.com web site receives nearly 45,000 hits/month.
All competition screening DVDs are created by returning
Nodance sponsor Zuma Digital. Zuma Digital is a New York-based,
private company with a strong focus on DVD technologies.
Filmmakers interested in making submissions can obtain an
ND4 application at the festival's newly redesigned web site
at www.nodance.com.
