Austin
Film News
The Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival runs through September4th.
Info at http://www.agliff.org
Indiecan's latest film, "Cleopatra's
Second Husband," opens at the Arbor on 11/3. The film is
quite interesting. Check out my review
Meanwhile, the latest news from The Dobie is that they will
be getting "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" and "The Tao of Steve,"
two big Sundance faves, sometime in September. One of their
sister theaters in Houston, either the Landmark River Oaks
or the Greenway, will be getting "Psycho Beach Party" in September.
Will an Austin date be coming soon as well?
Has anybody checked out the interview with Wiley
Wiggins in this month's "Jane" magazine? It's just a one
page blurb that treats him too much like a has-been. Still,
the pictures are cute!
I have to remember to ask Courtney Davis, who I have met at
the Austin Film Festival office about her film "My Name is Buttons."
Whenever we get together, we're always talking about other people's
films.

SEPTEMBER SCREENPLAY AND SHORT FILM ANNOUNCED FOR MOVIE MIDWIFING
SERIES (PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION)
(AUSTIN, TX) On Tuesday, September 5th, Alchemy Works will present
a screening of 'The Story of an Hour,' an 11-minute DV short
film directed by Austinite Tom Chamberlain as part of its ?Movie
Midwifing? series. The evening will continue with a staged reading
of a comedic script, 'Dumb Luck: Or How Not to Win the Lottery,'
by Austin screenwriter and instructor Sara Stiffler.
The series takes place once a month, August through December,
2000 at The Hideout at 617 Congress Avenue (www.thehideout.org).
Featured screenwriters of the series not only receive public
readings of their screenplays, they also receive a free package
of Movie Magic Screenwriter 2000 software from Screenplay
Systems, Incorporated.
If you're a writer, actor, filmmaker, or just plain LOVE
movies and would like to participate in the process of "birthing"
one, please plan to attend! With you there in the audience,
and a professional cast of actors assembled to read the script,
the idea of the series is to breathe life into a nascent screenplay
to see if it needs further shaping or improvement. Your attendance
and feedback will help forge the blueprint for a great movie-to-be!
Plus, share your comments with local emerging filmmakers after
viewing their work during the short film screening. Come and
mingle with tomorrow?s auteurs and moguls!
Take out your calendar now and mark down Tuesday, September
5th to come to The Hideout at 617 Congress Avenue in Austin,
Texas. The reading of ?Dumb Luck? will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the screening of ?The Story
of an Hour? will start at 7:15 p.m. Admission is $5 at the

Organizing Meeting for the 3rd Grassroots Documentary Film &
Video Festival
The Grassroots Media Network invites you to attend the first
meeting to organize the 3rd Grassroots Documentary Film and
Video Festival to be held in Austin, TX. in March. The meeting
will be held on Sunday, September 3rd at 2pm, outside the
Texas Union Ballroom on the 2nd floor of the Texas Union on
the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
The purpose of the Grassroots Documentary Film and Video
Festival is to showcase progressive film and video works that
focus on issues that are not recognized by mainstream media
or that tackle issues in ways not done in mainstream media,
with the main focus being on people of color, gays, lesbians,
transgendered people, women, the environment, labor issues,
poverty, housing issues and homelessness, health, civil disobedience,
mass movements and other issues that effect our communities.
Since this is the first meeting for this festival, we will
have to come up with an overall strategy. The items listed
under 'Long-term planning' will be introduced for us to begin
thinking about. However, we can assign the immediate tasks
for individuals to accomplish.
We're looking for people with different skills -- everything
from grantwriting to graphic design to event planning. We
welcome your participation whether you are experienced or
want to gain experience in these areas.
Please feel free to call us for more information. Grassroots

From Austin : We got into the VIP lounge where Patrick
Swayze, who cut the red ribbon to open the building, was consistently
mobbed by fans. The poor man could not get left alone. He
would stroll through the lounge occasionally and some woman
would swoon. He did look quite sexy in person. He looked really
good.
