Notes from Austin, Volume 2 #29

LODGER's Notes

My pal John Christensen is spending some time doing some "pick-up" filming on the "Jesse James" picture. I guess this is going to be sort of a "Young Guns" version of the story. A lot of younger actors are in the film. The only one I can remember now is Scott Caan, who has a minor role. John says the set of "Jesse" is really nice and that the cast, even the minor folks such as himself, are treated really well. He seems to think it is a pretty comfortable shoot even though it's very hot and they are all in these period costumes. They are shooting on some property owned by Willie Nelson somewhere outside Austin, where the singer has some sort of "western" town set up.

John has done some scenes in a church and in a saloon. I think he told me he sings "Amazing Grace" with the cast at some point in the film.

John says the set of "Miss Congeniality," the Sandra Bullock movie he worked on recently, was vastly different. There were a lot more people, and much more chaos. He said Donald Petrie, who directed the Bullock film, was very nice, but the crew was often not very happy, and things didn't go as smoothly as they should have.

John's also going to be shooting some scenes for Tony Hewitt's "The Duo" here in September and he is working on preproduction for Diane Murray's "El Diablo" feature. Apparently, he is going to be helping Murray with casting as well as doing some acting. Murray wants to get Harry Dean Stanton for a role, but is not sure if that's going to happen yet.

I hung out over at John's last week and saw Mark Brauner, aka Jeffrey Stylus, his cohost from "LubeTV." We had a pretty good time. Bunny and Charlie stopped by and that was cool. Bunny just broke up with Tomato, so he's a bit depressed. We drank heavily and listened to music. I'm sure we talked about a lot of stuff, but I really don't remember much of it. Oh, yeah. John and I discussed Austin Film Festival since both of us are doing some stuff for them this year.

Did you see Austin's 6th street attraction and oft-time mayoral candidate Leslie on cover of "The Texas Triangle?" S/he has a big write up in the mag as well.

Speaking of local gay pubs, Ambush magazine reports that "TWIT," (aka "This Week in Texas") is stopping publication after 25 1/2 years. That's a loss.

The other day, I spent the day with my lesbian buds Mary and Jan. We ate at Spaghetti Warehouse. We wanted to go to Frank and Angies but they don't open until 5 on Sundays. Bummer. We also watched "But I'm a Cheerleader" at the Dobie and had a few rounds at Oilcan Harry's. On Sunday afternoon, Harry's has $1 Mimosas.
I spent a few hours comforting another friend who broke up with his girl friend recently. That sounds wrong! You know what I mean. Of course, they were back together within a few days.
A recent "Austin Chronicle" article said that David Bean, leader of my favorite local 80's band, The Judys, announced a project of a Judys' "tribute" CD with lotsa local bands performing their old tunes. How's 'bout getting the original work out on CD David? Damn!
I visited Houston this past weekend and saw my family. That was nice. We also took in the Grand Opening VIP night at the Webster Cinemark theater (located around the Space Center area in South Houston). The new Cinemark theater design is wonderful, with a real plush Art Deco look. I loved the theater. We got into the VIP lounge where Patrick Swayze, who cut the red ribbon to open the building, was consistently mobbed by fans. The poor man could not get left alone. He would stroll through the lounge occasionally and some woman would swoon. He did look quite sexy in person. He looked really good.
Saturday, I came back to Austin for the Hobble CD release show at Flamingo Cantina. Their new work is called "Blackmassking." There was a pretty good crowd there. Lead singer Oriah introduced me to a guy who is making a short film. Oriah plays an alien in the movie. Says the singer, "I'm playing some kind of ambiguous space alien traveling incognito on earth looking for human specimens to put in a zoo. (It) will supposedly be shot before the end of Sept."

Meanwhile, Director Ryan Cox has a little bit more involved explanation, "...My film is called "Calling Occupants." I'm not sure how to describe it. Basically, I play this kid who has a really shitty life, but mostly he exaggerates everything to make it much worse than it is. Well, it doesn't really have a plot, it's just sort of a series of scenes, but Oriah plays this guy that i'm obsessed with who keeps popping up in my life, even though I don't know who he is. But I have these homoerotic dreams about him where I'm dying and shit. so anyway, we end up meeting up, and he comes over... and weird things happen. And then at the end, I discover the true nature of his being..."

Sounds pretty damn interesting.

What is Perfect Day 2000? It's some sort of gay event that I am unfamiliar with. It's happening Aug 31 - Sept 4 here in Austin.
I finally gave in and watched the very last episode of "Survivor." What an evil, bitter, vulgar, pathetic excuse for entertainment. This is truly a signification of the end of civilization as we know it. I feel sorry for you vapid, vampiric, heartless feebs who watched this ridiculous excursion into childish, petulant back stabbing, back-biting behavior with rabid, seething lust. You should be ashamed of yourselves!

But - wow - jeez - an openly gay man won! Amazing.

I also watched LubeTV Wednesday night which featured a few select scenes with my favorite cutie Matt, who, John Christensen tells me, may not be coming back to Austin for fall semester. Bummer. At least I have the video! Okay, I don't have the video - but john does. I should ask for a dub. The show also featured, in addition to cohost Mark Brauner (aka Jeffrey Stylus), Jules the Bear and Ryan (as Princess Leia, no less). Ryan worked on "Miss Congeniality" with John).

They showed Wall of Voodoo's video for "Mexican Radio," a perennial classic, and another short by Danny Plotnick. The short filmmaker has had two of his other films shown on LubeTV but this was by far his best. Called "Dumbass from Dundas..." or something close to that... It was funny, clever, outrageous, and foul-mouthed. And it was coherent! I really liked it. Plotnick's stuff seems to be shot on either 8 or 16 with dubbed sound and the quality and humor of his films prove how vital the medium can be when utilized by a creative and amusing person.

After "Lube," ACTV showed some sort of interesting "group discussion" on video that featured a bunch of biracial collegians. It was interesting. It's always an exciting moment to find what ACTV will run after "LubeTV." One time it was tejano music, another, a religious program. Even the omnipresent Alex Jones stuff has run after the show. It would be a great time slot for a permanent show if someone could produce something more bizarre than "Lube" to run after it.
