If you want an idea of what Richard Linklater's new animated
film "Waking Life" starring Wiley
Wiggins looks like, take a peek at the actor's website.
There's a pix on the index that must surely be from the film.
Wiley has said that the animation style changes throughout
the film, but this sure is an exciting first glimpse into
what the film may look like!
Wiley has done some animation work behind the scenes for
the film, including animating scenes in which he appears.
Currently he's on location in Texas shooting the new Zellner
Brother's flick "Frontier." Wiley appeared in their earlier
film, "Plastic Utopia."
I recently came across a Yahoo club for Wiley fans where
the man had actually posted a little newsflash for his fans
himself. Sayeth Wiley, "'Waking Life' should be out in fall.
It's filmed in digital video and then animated (hand rotoscoped)
on the computer. Richard Linklater ('Dazed and Confused,'
'Slacker') directed and it also has Ethan Hawke, Nicky Katt,
Julie Delphy, Speed Levitch, and some folks from 'Slacker'
in it. Basically the movie is me having a very long and strange
dream and I won't give away much more than that.... I'm doing
a movie with Dave and Nathan Zellner ('Plastic Utopia') called
'Frontier,' that has a lot of me freaking out and having sex
with inanimate objects. Other than that I'm trying to sell
a book of short stories but there's not much market for books
nowadays that aren't about Mariah Carey or something..."
Okay - now I REALLY wanna see "Frontier!" Oh - and by the
Way - John Christensen is also in "Waking Life." I haven't
seen John much lately as he has been doing the proverbial
shitload of acting. In addition to a recent stint on the set
of "Miss Congeniality," John is working on a "Jessie James"
film and also has a speaking role in the new Jam Pictures
outing, "The Duo."
Could I be more stupid? Last week I listed DJ Qualls' new film
shooting in Austin later this year as "The Big Guy" when it
is in fact called "The New Guy." Perhaps I was thinking of DJ
in his undies in "Road
Trip" when I came up with the title "The Big Guy?" He he
Actually, what I did was make an amalgamation of his two
upcoming projects. First he's working on Barry Sonnenefeld's
"Big Trouble" and then he's coming to Austin in October to
film "The New Guy," a comedy recently picked up from turnaround
by Joe Roth's Revolution studios.
"Big Trouble" is an ensemble cast piece based on a Dave
Barry novel. Yep, the cutesy columnist has written a work
of fiction. The film is set to star Tim Allen, Rene Russo,
Janeane Garofalo, Heavy D., Jason Lee, Tom Sizemore, Stanley
Tucci, Jack Black, Omar Epps, Dennis Farina, and Qualls. Amusingly,
Patrick Warburton, who starred on the Harry Anderson sitcom
based on Barry's columns is set to play a role here as well.
Most people know him best as Puddy on "Seinfeld." Qualls should
be sharing most of his screen time with another teenage actor
(or actor playing a teenager). This film will be lensed in
Miami.
"The New Guy" will be directed by Ed Decter, making his
debut. It was written by David Kendall. No other cast has
been announced yet. DJ told me he starts filming it here in
Austin in October.
Qualls can be seen in "Road Trip" which is still playing
around town here. And he's in "Cherry Falls" (a horror comedy
where virgins are the target of a serial killer) which will
see a limited released on 9/29. If you're going to NY's Future
of Film Festival on 8/3, you might get to see a sneak of it!
Rumor has it that the DV feature being shot in Austin called
"Pageant" has stopped shooting although filming is not completed
as of yet.
The Austin test screenings of "The
Exorcist 2000" were a huge success. Warners will be unleashing
the new version of the film on 1500+ screens on 9/22.
The Quentin Tarantino QT Quatro festival will be happening at
the Alamo Drafthouse for 9 days, from 8/25-9/2. According tot
he Alamo's latest e-mail newsletter, "Tarantino will guest host
two Saturday Morning Film Club screenings at noon on Saturday,
August 26 and again on September 1. These screenings are free
for kids and their accompanying adults only (kid-less adult
fanboys will only be allowed in if the event does not sell out!)"
Does this apply to Harry
Knowles as well? Or does he rent a kid? Or does he count
as a kid because his father Jay brings him to the screening?
The "ST FRANCISVILLE EXPERIMENT," a film that seems to be in
the same vein as "Blair Witch," opens in test markets FRESNO
and ALBERQUERQUE on 7/28. No word yet on where the film might
go next. The tests will surely help determine this though.
The Chris Rock remake of "Heaven Can Wait" has had it's title
changed from "I Was Made to Love Her" to the somewhat less horrible
"Down to Earth." It's also moved to a fall release date.
I saw the preview trailer this week for Gary Oldman's new film,
"The Contender." Wow! He looks like he will once again rock
the house. The film has a woman (Joan Allen) being appointed
as Vice President when the former holder of that office dies.
Jeff Bridges, it seems, plays the president. Oldman plays a
Southern congressman (or representative?) who tries to dig up
dirt on her to block her appointment. It looks awesome! Oldman
is almost unrecognizable. He just continues to surprise.
Courtney Love has dropped out of Brian DiPalma's "Ghost of Mars"
allegedly due to a sprained ankle. Hmmm... Wonder what the real
story (catfight) is. Love and DiPalma sounds like a bad mix
anyway. Famke Jannsen may replace her.
"The Tic Code," a drama that has something to do with Tourette's
Syndrome is due on 8/4. It stars quite a few well know names
including Gregory Hines and Carol Kane. Oddly, in addition to
NY and LA getting the opening week screenings, Houston will
also open the film first. Doesn't the distributor, Jazz Films,
know that Austin is the "third coast" film capitol?
What marketing genius dubbed Steve Harvey an "Original King
of Comedy?" And who are the other three black guys in the
film with him? I've never heard of any of them. This is the
most blatant misrepresentation in marketing since "American
Beauty" was called a "comedy."
