SXSW
- Day 9, Saturday, 3/18/2000
I'm getting old. I tried to "party hearty" today. I wanted
to see movies all damn day. After 9 1/2 hours and four films
and one short, I was zonked. My mind was kettle fish. I just
couldn't squenchie anymore.
Maybe I should wait til tomorrow to write this...
Went to the Dobie around 11:30am. "The
Big Kahuna" was showing at noon and I wanted to be a little
early because I knew it would be crowded. I had heard good
things about this film all week. (Read
my review).
Between shows at the Dobie, I met and talked with Sarah
Gish. She is the Landmark Theaters city Manager in Houston.
She does an awesome job. I wish she would come work in Austin.
This led me to mention the website and into a conversation
with some other folks in the audience including a lady who
knew Harry Knowles casually and spoke very nicely of him.
Watched "The
Wedding Cow." (Read my review). The house was packed.
I sat in the front as always and was glad I did because, after
the show, some folks were complaining about how they couldn't
read the subtitles at the bottom of the screen.
A cute college aged guy sat by me. He was so funny. When
he would laugh at something in the movie, he would look over
at me. Like we were sharing the joke. I thought it was adorable.
I kept wondering why he was looking at me and not his girlfriend
next to him. When the show was over, he got up and left her
sitting there. That's when I realized he had come in on his
own. I've got to start paying more attention to the world
around me. For someone who wants to be a "social commentator,"
I don't really keep my eyes open enough. Last night at Patti
Smith, I stood directly behind this person with a backpack
on for a long time before I realized it was a lady wearing
it. Then another 5 minutes before I realized it wasn't a backpack
at all but a papoose with a sleeping infant in it.
Ate some Chinese at the Dobie. In that little restaurant,
not in the food court. It was awesome. Went to the Convention
Center and had to walk all the way around the building before
they would let me enter without a "badge." Security was tight
now that the music part of the fest was in full swing. Saw
the girl who was the house manager for the theater there and
she waved me through without making me take out my pass and
ID and such. Thank you God for one nice, thoughtful and relaxed
volunteer. She was a real sweetie.
Watched a film called "The
Operator." (Read my review). The writer/director Jon Dichter
was actually on hand to do a Q&A. I think everyone else had
already left town. He lived in Texas, I think maybe in austin.
He mentioned he had done some teaching at UT in the past.
The Q&A was kinda rough on him. No one was outright rude but
members of the audience weren't afraid to question his script-writing
choices and challenge him to justify them. He handled all
of this with attentive composure. He impressed me greatly
with his thoughtful answers and reasonable explanations for
his choices. He was really an interesting guy and didn't seem
to be full of himself at all.
Saw Jan and Eric, some friends of Harry Knowles that I kinda
know from going to festivals and sneaks and said hello. Jan
is a very sweet lady and I sometimes feel like I get on her
nerves a bit with my chattering about my opinions and stuff.
I mean, if she wanted my opinions she could just get on line,
right? Anyway, i'm trying to be a little less annoying in
my real life these days. On line, I'm still going to be my
usual sweet self... hehehe...
Watched "Wildflowers."
(Read my review). I had forgotten completely about Christine
Vachon being here for the fesitval. She is one of the producers
of "Wildflowers." She is one of the few people in the business
I would like to meet. She has produced a plethora of gay themed
films including much of the work of Todd Haynes and Todd Solondz's
"Happiness."
(Yes, I have a script I want to give her). I'm so dumb,
I'm sure she was at the first screening of "Wildflowers."
She certainly wasn't at this one.
"Wildflowers" was proceeded by a short called "The
Last Real Cowboy" (Read my review).
After all of this, I had a pretty bad headache and just
had to go home. I watched SNL hosted by WWF's The rock. I
needed some mind-numbing nonsense to sedate me for a while.
Until the next Fest!
