SXSW
- Day 7, Thursday, 3/16/2000
There was an 11:30am screening at the Dobie, so I went to
check it out. I ate a bite a Taco Bell in the mall and then
went to the theater. I sat in the front row of the Egyptian
themed theater. It's layout is so awful. I think they should
redo the room with bare wires and construction beams leaning
against the wall and stuff. Let's face it, this house is a
engineering disaster, it should look like an industrial wasteland.
I know there had to be a better way to lay it out. It's definitely
an "alternative space."
Someone from the other side of the theater said hello. It
was Tim the Wonder Horse. I was surprised to see him since
he has a day job. But he does temp work and he told me his
last assignment had ended. For some reason, Tim felt it necessary
to come sit by me and talk to me. Why can't he just leave
me the fuck alone? Anyway, we chit-chatted about movies and
he told me this screening was one of the D.A. Pennebaker films.
I realized "Moon
Over Buffalo" was the documentary about the Broadway play
starring Carol Burnett made a few years ago when she did her
first show in NY in over 30 years. I had always wanted to
see this one. What a stroke of luck and an amazing treat.
(Read
my Review).
After the showing, Tim made a hasty retreat and I tried
to decide whether to hang around for the next show at 2:30
or not. It was only 1:15. I decided to go home. Stopped at
Cheapos on the way and bought a few CD's. I got a Tiktok CD
and Linda Rondstadt's "Mad Love" as well as a 70's sampler
with Charlie Daniels Band's "Uneasy Rider" on it. That song
runs through my head every time I hear that Dynamite Hack
tune. They have a similar chord sequence on one line or something.
Cheapos had some live bands playing in the place, which has
expanded to be huge, by the way.
At 4, I headed downtown to go to the Paramount and see "The
Filth and the Fury," the new Sex Pistols documentary.
(Read
my review). There was only a short line to get in. I stood
there for a while and finally noticed that Jan, a lady I know
from going to film festivals and sneak previews, was standing
two people ahead of me. I said hello and we discussed the
films we had seen. The lady between us, who was reading a
Molly Ivens book, joined in and we all discussed what we had
seen and what was good and bad. The lady that I did not know
really seemed to like the documentary about the unionization
of strippers; It's title is something like "Topless Girls
Unite" or something like that. Jan had seen a lot of films
too. She likes almost everything.
No luminaries were around for "Filth." It was introduced
by Mark Savlov of the Austin Chronicle.
Waited around after the film for the next feature, "Wonderwall."
(Read my review). Walked with Kelly, my friend who works
at the Paramount, down to Subway so he could grab a bite.
He said there had been some tornadoes sighted in North Austin.
It was already getting dark but the sky still looked gray
and it was sprinkling. I had to wait outside in the wet cold
for a few minutes in order to see the next feature, even though
the crowd was pretty light. I did get to watch the well-oiled
machine that is SXSW as they picked up the print of "Filth"
almost right after the show. SXSW has a build-up and break-down
area, where the reels of the 35mm prints are built and the
disassembled for shipping, in a building downtown separate
from the festival event venues.
"Wonderwall" was shown after a silly 12 minute short called
"Reflections
of Love." (Read my review).
I pretty much had decided to stay at the Paramount all night
for movies. Before the final one, I talked to Kelly again.
He told me that Neil Young would be there for his new film
on Friday. I want to go see Patti Smith (which, for some stupid
reason I thought was on Saturday). He said Neil Young had
reserved the entire balcony for his entourage and friends
and stuff. It's going to be hard to get a seat to that film.
And then after that is "High Fidelity." I think they'll be
turning people away at the Paramount tomorrow.
The final film was Peter Greenaway's new movie, "8
1/2 Women." (Read my review). I sat down towards the front.
A cute guy with hair that hung down in his eyes was in the
row ahead of me. For a second I thought it was Wiley
Wiggins, but he's changed his hairstyle recently. I wondered
what such a cutey was doing on his own. It wasn't long till
his friends joined him. The Greenaway film was good but I
caught myself looking at the guy every once in awhile. He
had the longest fingers which he could not keep off of his
face nor out of his mouth. It was sexy.
