SXSW
- Day 6, Wednesday, 3/15/2000
Got off from work a little early, so I headed over to the
Alamo for a 5pm screening. I'm off Thursday, Friday and Saturday
so I plan to cram a lot of film going into those days. I also
want to see Patti Smith Saturday night at Waterloo Park. I'm
hoping to hook up with some friends for that. I'm not even
sure where Waterloo Park is.
Said hi to Karrie, the owner of the Alamo. They didn't have
wait staff, just bar service for the show, so I ordered up
two Hard Core Ciders. Before the feature, they played some
clips of "Andre the Giant has a Posse" with the sound down
and some Tom Waits (I think) playing. The guy in the documentary,
"Andre," who I think started the whole "Andre TGHAP" silkscreen/sticker/skateboard
craze was a living doll. He had those wonderful pouty lips
and he looked like a male model. I want to see the damn thing
with sound now!
One thing I have forgot to mention for a few days was the
SXSW opening trailers. On day one, I saw the girl with the
cowboy boots in a fishing boat. since then, I've seen two
different trailers where people are playing dominoes (as if
we needed two!) while the same damn dance techno song plays.
I don't get these trailers. I think they are really horrible.
What do they have to do with SXSW, film or Texas, really.
I think they are supposed to represent how "laid back" Texas
and Austin is. Yawn.
The SXSW feature, "Dropping
Out" had been recommended to me in an e-mail from someone
I did not know, so I went to check it out. It was an interesting
black comedy. (Read
my review).
The filmmakers, the Osborne brothers, Kent and Mark, acts
as writer/star and director respectively. The are two of the
nicest and most gracious fellas you would want to meet, which
makes it even harder to judge the film. Kent, who also hosts
some sort of movie show on one of the Turner cable outlets,
talked about how he loved the Alamo and how cool it was to
have their film shown there. They said they had shown the
film only 5 times previous and the crowd at the Alamo was
definitely the most responsive. I'm assuming the film will
receive some tweaking as there were a few jokes that do not
work and got no laughs which I imagine they may rethink. The
guys answered a plethora of questions and had the audience
in the palm of their hands. It was a pleasure to hear them
speak.
I hopped outside, waited in line a few minutes and caught
the next feature at the Alamo, a local documentary called
"Too
High, Too Wide, Too Long." I talked to Karrie again and
she told me how much she liked "Dropping Out." She thinks
it will get picked up.
I had a Alamo Burger and another Cider while I watched the
documentary. The director, Karen Dinitz, also was in attendance
and did a Q&A. She does some freelance work locally in the
film industry as her "daytime gig" and spent 4 years or so
putting together "Too
High, Too Wide, Too Long." (Read my review).
Went home for a while and wrote a bit. I was going to go
to the Paramount and see the "Exorcist," but it starts at
a local theater on Friday and I saw no reason to spend this
week's valuable time at a screening of it. I also wanted to
catch LubeTV on cable.
While I was on line, I got some e-mail from my friend Brad
Sand. He had sent me a review of "Beyond
the Mat," a wrestling documentary showing at SXSW. (Read
Brad's review).
Wanted to go to the midnite screening of "Outside Out" at
the Alamo but i was just too damn tired. It shows again later
this week, so I hope to catch it.
