I
woke up at eight this morning after an almost sleepless night--this
is what I recommend for any film festivals that you might
attend in the future.
I started off the day by watching the screeners I had taken
home last night: Home Sweet Hoboken, Revenge of the Red Balloon
and Peepshow (all of which I'll write reviews for).
Then it was time to head over to downtown for more of the
action and insanity that is Slamdance. I really haven't had
much desire to go to any of the Sundance screenings except
to say I went. I did tape some footage of people waiting in
line.
We drove separate cars into town. Stubby and me in his and
Web and the others in theirs. Me and Stubb wanted to check
out this live web interview John Pierson had with a few directors
that were part of the festivals. If you don't know who Mr.
Pierson is, he's the host of "Split Screen" on the Independent
Film Channel, who's helped many unknowns become known. The
turnout was very disappointing I talked to one of the producers
I think who gave me a IFC T-shirt and gave me permission to
use some pictures I'd taken as long as I mentioned the channel
and their show. Also in attendance was Bob Ray director of
Rock Opera. Stubby asked if I could get an interview with
him on video. He agreed. I was a little nervous cause I wasn't
at all prepared, but I did like the movie quite a bit so I
thought what the hell. He was a very good sport for being
put on the spot. I think it actually came out really good,
you be the judge when we put it on the site. Cause it's coming.
Afterwards, we met up with the others. They went their way
and I went to see "Dolphins". I walk in and the line is all
the way down the hallway. I step up to the ticket desk and
ask if their showing "Dolphins" which they confirm and then
I, I'm sorry to say abuse my power as part of the media, I
flashed my badge and walked right in. I felt bad at first,
but it wore off as soon as I saw that the entire room seemed
packed and people made their place on the floor and in the
aisle. The M.C. asked if anyone had an empty seat next to
them, to which a few people raised their hands. So I took
a seat and waited to see my first Slamdance feature. It started
off with two shorts before it: "Voodoo" and "Crosswalk". They
were both very good and "Dolphins" was great. I really love
the fact that I'm seeing movies that haven't been judged yet
and could very well never be seen again.
I leave the theater to pass out some more flyers and after
about a block or two I come up on Stubb who's ecstatic with
the fact that he just got a shot of Neve Campbell, which was
just nuts. The second day and another great shot. Who's tomorrow.
I want Redford.
We wander around for a bit looking for Chuck and the others.
We finally decide to try and go back to the hotel and hope
for the best. We ended up having to drive back to downtown
and eat our McDonald's in the car. It was now about 4:30 so
we decided to head on over to the Slamdance site so I could
get a few more screeners of things that I wanted to see. It
ended up being a little to crowded due to the free drinks
they were giving away. They gave all who came three tickets,
one ticket, one drink. I could only handle half of a screwdriver.
We headed down to the No Dance party, hoping again to find
the others there. And again no luck. We hung around for a
bit and had couple more free drinks. Only a coke this time,
since the wear and tear from last night and today began to
kick in, which I'm sure that vodka didn't help any either.
We watched a film here that was alright called "When Actors
Attack" which looked like it was filmed by a couple of friends
with good editing facilities. It was okay. After that everything
pretty much fell apart and every went their separated ways,
so we went ours. Back to Slamdance, Stubb got another drink
and we talked to a few people, then headed over to the filmmaker's
lounge to see "Enter".
The turnout was very disappointing, especially since the video
was very good. It'll show again, so keep an eye out cause
it's cool. If you'd like to know a little more about it read
my review. After the screening Stubb sat down and had an interview
with the director, which was going really well until the battery
ran out, but don't worry we got plenty so check it out when
we get it up.
After Enter it was about all we could handle. So, I stopped
by the press desk and grabbed the few screeners that I wanted
then headed home.
We got here. The others were here and now I sit writing about
it all to you.
