Austin
Film Festival 2004 - Day 7- October 20, 2004
I got my wisdom teeth pulled today and was on a lot
of good drugs, so I spent most of the day sleeping. At
about 9pm, I woke up and felt better than I had in a week.
I know some people have had lots of problems when they
have had their wisdom teeth removed, but my experience
was not unpleasant in any way. On good drugs and all the
nerve-ending, damaged tooth pain gone, I woke up and felt
like a million bucks.
There were no major films showing on Wednesday
night. Had I been able, I probably would have gone to
the Arbor and seen "Cape of Good Hope" and "Down to
the Bone" but c'est la vie.
I felt so good that I actually wrote my daily report
for Day One and reviews
for "Overnight"
(which I found out is going to open at The Dobie on
12/3) and "The
Woodsman". I downloaded some pictures from my camera
and even answered my e-mail. It had been days since
I felt like doing any of this.
I also put in Gus Sack's (see Day
4) DVD and watched some of his films. His short
"Please Do," which showed in some sort of student showcase
at AFF, was actually quite good. Many of Gus' shorts
are made at "The New York Film Academy." I'll have to
send him an e-mail and ask him what that is all about.
Most of them are black and white and remind me of the
sort of thing that UT film students in their junior
year make, which is pretty amazing since, I believe,
Gus is only 16.
The rest of the DVD featured footage he had shot
on video as a kid (a little Spielberg, Gus has apparently
been trying to make slasher films and goofy films with
friends since he was a young, young kid). There was
a highlight reel of footage he apparently shot at his
high school football games. And there was a hilarious
and quite good original song music video featuring a
funny and candid rap about STD's. I was pretty impressed
and delighted by some of the stuff on the DVD.
