Austin Film Festival 2000

Day 5 (10/16/2000 )

AFF is a weekend schmooze fest and more about the parties and the panels than the films. These weekday reports will probably be quite short as I don't foresee much happening other than seeing some interesting films.

I had a lot of personal things to take care of during the day on Monday and had to get up early. I caught a one hour nap in the evening, and then headed to the Paramount for the Harry Knowles Ain't-It-Cool-News "Picks of the Festival." Once there, I found out Harry was simply showing "ABCD," a competition film I had already seen, so I opted to skip out. I saw Harry in the foyer of the Paramount and saw my friend Kelly working behind the bar but didn't stop to say hi. I was thinking of trying to get to the Arbor for "Just Looking" but decided to get home instead and catch up on some writing.

I went to take in a local video film called "Polyp and Corbin Take Over" at the Ritz and ran into Bob Ray, director of "Rock Opera" coming out of the venue. He had just had another showing of his film and said it went quite well. Bob said folks laughed at the more subtle humor in the film this time around leading me to believe that they were no where nearly as intoxicated as the local crowd with which I first saw the film a year ago.

After "Polyp," which I fled from as quickly as possible, I looked around 6th street a bit. I glanced in a pizza place and noticed my friend John (I have so many friends name John, hmmmm...) eating a piece of pizza. John is gay and I met him at an Agliff screening last year. We took in a few films after that then sort of lost touch, although we did hook up at Agliff earlier this year as well a few times. John was undergoing his weekly ritual of working out and getting pizza on 6th. I told him about the burgers at Casino and offered to buy him a drink, even though I don't think he imbibes, and he graciously declined but told me he would check out Casinos some other time.

Casinos is my normal Monday night hangout because it is cheap drink night. I had invited a few friends to hook up with me at the place but the rain seemed to keep everyone home. I hung out for a while; drank some beers; and spied a few cute guys, including this one weird little mod guy that I keep seeing around. He was playing kissey-face with a female which seemed highly unlikely. Anyway, after I ate and drank and it was after 1am, I headed home.
